I had forgotten what a great experience the fall run of fish can be. The last two mornings in the drizzle with the leaves definitely starting to turn in the background and we had a steady stream of fish in most of the expected places. The best part about these fish is not only are they actively feeding but they are bigger and certainly stronger than they were a few months ago. I am guessing that the rain has started the young alewives seriously heading out to sea and the stripers are lined up to take full advantage of that feeding opportunity. They took a variety of jigs and plugs in fact I fished most of yesterday morning with a surface popper and had several fish myself in between running the trolling motor to position the boat and unhooking fish for my client.
Of course the down side was a chilly drizzle and it sounds like the same tomorrow but it was definitely worth it and I look forward to the next trip. I think that the color change is made more intense by the fog and drizzle and after our long dry stretch the rain is most welcome. I forgot my camera this morning which means no pictures to send to today’s client or to post on the web page. I’ll try and do better tomorrow. I’m hoping that the fish will too! We had one of the hottest days of the year last Saturday followed by a cool and rainy Sunday. Even though the weather still says summer the leaves have begun to change and the fall bird migrations are on. Last week I counted an even dozen bluebirds on the power line in front of the house. I assume that they begun to form flocks for their fall trip. The Great Blue Herons and Ospreys are everywhere on the shores of the St. George River not to mention clouds of sandpipers getting ready to migrate. I am seeing Yellowlegs on the mudflats with their constant tattling. I would say that we are at about five percent color change but even the trees that are still green have begun to slowly change the shade of green. The next few weeks will be the best of the year in terms of weather and scenery in my book. I have open dates between now and Columbus Day. If you have not had a chance to get out into the Maine Outdoors take a day and enjoy the best time of the year we have all earned it.
