Yesterday was one of those cold rainy days that we sometimes have in the summer. I was working in the office and was not really affected (just luck that I did not have a trip scheduled). By around two in the afternoon I realized that I was sitting at my desk with a fleece jacket on and still cold. There was only one thing to do, light a fire in the wood stove. I did and the office warmed right up not to mention chasing the dampness out of the air. I know that I have mentioned to many of you that I seem to use the woodstove at least some every month of the year, July is on the books for this summer.
The striper fishing has improved very much in the last two weeks. We are now experiencing some excellent fishing. Fish are predictable and in their regular summer patterns, last weekend I even had fishing chasing bait on the surface for well over an hour. They are taking flies very well and I would venture to say that fly fisherman will catch more fish than even bait fisherman for a while. I expect that the bigger fish will show up any day and the most fun part summer striper fishing will be here. I look forward to the fish moving onto the shallow flats that line the Saint George and allow you to try for fish you can see. Last week also produced the first bluefish of this season, he was alone but because it is so early I am guessing that we will have a few around for a good part of the next two months. While I usually do not target them they do provide a little variety to the fishing.
Canoe trips are seeing eagles, loons and muskrats on Seven Tree Pond and Round Ponds. The eagles are consistently on the point across from the boat launch sitting in the tall pines. I really impressed a couple from Texas when I could see an eagle in a tree from across the pond. In reality I know where they like to sit and could see the white spot that I knew must be an adult eagles head against the green of the pines. A morning family fishing trip in the rain this week was an absolute blast. Those two boys were counting fish like I never do and their totals for the morning were impressive. (Twenty four and twenty) Needless to say we went though a bunch of worms. The only thing missing from the trip was a bass or two that I have come to expect when perch fishing. Of all the trips I do every summer fishing with kids is the most fun, especially when the fish are so cooperative.
My next small business seminar for guides has been scheduled for three evenings in September and a specialized marketing seminar one evening the next week. Check it out at Maine Outdoors Seminars.
The summer season is in full swing but it is not too late to make plans for a trip in the Maine Outdoors. Click on the links below to see what the options are or give me a call and let's talk about the possibilities and arrange a trip for you or your family today.
