As I embarked on my 39th season, I made a commitment to myself: taking two days off each week. Now, I know what many of you might be thinking, "What's the big deal? Most people have weekends off!" And that's true, but life in a seasonal service business, especially one deeply committed to helping everyone experience the outdoors and appreciate our natural resources, is a little different.
In the past, I've often guided every client who came my way, sometimes leading two, or even three, trips a day, seven days a week! There was even one memorable time I guided at Libby Camps all day, then drove 250 miles home in the dark just to guide the next morning. And yes, I once made a nearly 500-mile, 48-hour round trip commute to Libby's for a single day of guiding fishermen (though I did stay overnight that time!). I used to think I had the whole winter off to recharge, but that rarely turned out to be the case either.
Embracing a New Rhythm
Thankfully, our online reservation system has made it much simpler for both of us! You can easily see my availability, and I can clearly mark those much-needed days off. Even so, it's still incredibly tough to say no when I get a call asking about a trip on one of those pre-scheduled days off. Especially when someone is hoping to create some wonderful family memories on the water.
So far, I'm holding firm to my days off, even when those phone calls come in. It's not easy on my end, and I know it can be a little disappointing on yours. But this commitment is important for me to continue providing the best experiences for you all.
