Going solar here was driven mostly by our need to avoid the regular power outages that have become part of our lives. Solar installations with a battery backup dropped in price significantly enough to make it attractive when paired with the tax incentive. So over the summer we had the garage roof replaced. Not that it was ready but having to remove the solar panels to replace the roof in ten years made little sense. Next was having the cable buried from our garage where the panels would be located to the back of the house to get the power to the electrical panel.
Then in late September the solar panels were installed and eventually connected to our system along with the battery. We have been up and running since the end of October. At this time of year the days are very short and the sun low to the horizon so that power generation is limited. Still we are generating about half of our power needs and the snow slides right off of the panels.
We wait though for the first outage to see how the whole system performs without the grid.
