Tomatoes are getting red in the garden, the grass is growing more slowly and mid-summer is here. This year is as busy as the last several and I am spending lots of time on the water with families. The most remarkable thing this summer is the large number of pogies (menhaden) in the Saint George River. They are everywhere! Of course a food source like that attract a lot of attention and not just from humans looking for lobster bait.
There are many eagles, seals everywhere and lots of very well fed stripers. The high eagle numbers cause territory disputes (like this one) and plenty of sightings. The seals are usually feeding at high tide but are more than obvious sunning themselves over the lower tides each day. Lots of terns and gulls as well who are happy to take advantage of the moments when the stripers chase the pogies to the surface in a feeding frenzy for everyone and a great chance at the stripers for my clients.
On the freshwater the loon chicks are about half grown. I there seem to be fewer loon chicks this summer and that the flocks of loons we normally see in early fall have already formed on the better fishing lakes. Clearly the summer is flying by and if you have not made time to get outside and enjoy the season yet please do it will be over before we know it.
