This weekend we had quite a gale with winds of over 50 miles an hour from Saturday afternoon to late Sunday. Most of Saturday we had torrential rain that was as much horizontal as vertical. I knew that the seas would be something to see so Argy and I took a ride down to Pemaquid Point Saturday afternoon. There were waves that I would guess to be about twenty feet high and a few higher ones crashing in on the rocks. There was pelting rain and salt spray flying through the air. We stood behind the brick fog signal so that we would not be blown back by the wind. I took several pictures but with nothing in the picture for scale the waves do not look all that impressive. When we went to leave there was a tree down and we had to go around on a back road. Many folks lost power as poles in many locations simply snapped off.
That night when I let the dogs out I heard a noise that I did not recognize and even came in to the house to get a flashlight and take a look. It was simply the westerly wind blasting down the hillside behind the house causing all of the tree limbs to crash together. I had not really heard that since late last winter and had forgotten the sound. We lost a few shingles off of the garage but the big change is that all of the leaves are now gone from the trees there can be no doubt that winter is just around the corner now.
I have been working with the Union Area Chamber of Commerce to develop a new web site. It was one of those times when knowing something about a topic can get you into trouble at a meeting. By default I became the project manager. The site came out pretty well thanks to the folks at Maine Web Hosting. Take a look at Union Area Chamber
I taped a session for a local outdoor issues program a couple of weeks ago and the show is scheduled to air on Sunday. Wildfire is broadcast only in Maine, the schedule of show times and stations is available here. I have appeared on this show several times and even sat in as the host for a few shows. Of all the things I have done over the years it is the one that draws the biggest local reaction. I won't be able to go anywhere in town for a week or so without someone mentioning that they saw me on TV. Even folks who I am surprised watch TV at all let alone an outdoor issues program. Go figure!
I am starting to work out my schedule for the coming winter and am lining up speaking engagements, if your club or group would like to have someone talk about our incredible striper fishery or the Maine Outdoors in general please give me a call or drop me an e-mail.
Happy Halloween!
Best regards,
