Winter observations

Yesterday morning, I had a blast ice fishing with a wonderful family! The weather was absolutely perfect – hardly any wind and a balmy 40 degrees. The only minor hiccup was a bit of water on the ice due to the warm temperatures and some rain the night before. But it was just enough to make us slosh as we walked around.

We caught a few fish, and both boys learned how to set up an ice fishing tip-up and fish with a jig pole. It was a fantastic time, and it reminded me exactly why I love guiding!

Later that evening, our first real snowstorm of the season arrived. By morning, we had a beautiful 8-10 inches of fresh, fluffy snow! The temperatures have plummeted, and we're in for a deep freeze for the next few days.

But the snow and cold brought a pleasant surprise – a flock of hungry birds to our feeders and, most excitingly, to our holly bush! We planted it years ago, and this fall it was covered with gorgeous red berries. Until this morning, I hadn't seen a single bird touch them. But as soon as the sun came up, I spotted a few male bluebirds feasting on the berries, followed by a flock of about 20 robins!

As I walked closer to take a picture, I noticed a pair of cardinals also enjoying the red berry buffet. It's clear that in just one day, the birds have made a significant dent in the berry supply!

It's a magical winter scene.
