This winter is already off to a great start with several good snowstorms here in the mid coast of Maine. We have had over a foot of snow on the ground since New Years Day, we had some rain that settled the snow but more is in the forecast for the coming weekend. As the days get longer I am looking forward to leading a few winter nature exploration trips on snowshoes.
I have been on a couple of winter adventures of my own recently. A snowmobile trip through Baxter State park and a couple of days at Libby Camps for their annual ice cutting weekend. More about the snowmobile trip in this newsletter and Argy wrote an excellent account of the ice cutting on her blog at with lots of pictures so you can see how much fun we were having.
I hope that you take some time to get out and enjoy it too!
Snowmobiling through Baxter State Park
Last week a group of us went to Millinocket where we rented snowmobiles from the New England Outdoor Center planning to ride through Baxter State Park and return. This trip was perfect with lots of snow in the park and excellent riding conditions.
In fact it made me think about the opportunities that there might be to guide similar trips to areas with excellent scenery that are easier to visit on a snowmobile. We had light snow through most of the afternoon and temperatures were pleasant. I am surprised at how comfortable and easy to operate the modern snowmobile is. Read more and see pictures
Don Kleiner Appointed to the Maine Tourism Commission
I received a letter last week from the outgoing Governor informing me that I have been appointed to the Maine Tourism Commission and my official appointment papers arrived in today’s mail. The Commission helps to direct the efforts of the Maine Office of Tourism in its marketing and development efforts. The marketing effort includes the state’s tourism web site.
They also work on the Governor’s Conference on Tourism each winter. This year it is being held at the Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland on February 17th with a dinner the evening before.
I was a member of the Commission in the 1990’s before I was appointed as the Director of Information and Education at the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries in Wildlife and I am looking forward to helping with the Commission’s work again.
It will definitely be interesting!
