After a beautiful summer and pleasant early fall, November arrived with plenty of rain, actually way too much. We have had a series of storms resulting in high water everywhere. I have cancelled some grouse hunting parties because of the weather and no one has been interested in fishing under these conditions. The current forecast is for a stretch of settled dry weather. Hopefully things will return to normal, but I expect that the Saint George River will not go down to a fishable level until late spring.
November marks the transition to what I call meeting season where my role as Executive Director of the Maine Professional Guides Association has me in some meeting or another at least three days a week. I also have to carve out some time to get firewood in for the winter. Always plenty to do .
I am grateful that I am able to spend most of my days in the Maine Outdoors or working for my fellow guides on issues that matter to all of us. I hope that each of you is as thankful as I am for the opportunities that life has presented.
Take a minute get out and enjoy the outdoors!
Casting for Recovery
Nice article in the NY Times recently about Casting for Recovery a program that helps women with breast cancer learn to fly fish. As part of Maine Outdoors commitment to donate ten percent of profits to conservation education I have been giving a trip to the Fish Tales and Cocktails auction held at Sugarloaf each winter.
Unfortunately I am usually busy during the Maine Casting for Recovery weekend but someday I hope to be able to guide for them.
My friend Bonnie Holding who has been the lead on Casting for Recovery in Maine was recognized as an LL Bean Outdoor hero last summer for her work. Take a minute and read the article. I am sure you will agree with me that this is a great project.
North Woods Video
The first party I guided at Libby Camps this fall spent two days fishing for brook trout and landlocked salmon and a day hunting for grouse and woodcock. They have posted a video of their trip online.
If you watch carefully you can see me guiding fishing (usually wearing a packbasket) and bird hunting. Great view of my October!
