On one of the hot afternoons last week I enjoyed an excellent Nature Exploration trip with a family. They had been on the same trip four years ago. I don't remember the exact details of that last trip but the boys all had great memories to tell me about, right down to how many fish they each caught on that trip.
Our trip got off to a great start as an eagle flew over our heads seconds after I had launched all of the canoes in Seven Tree Pond. We canoed up the Saint George River and into Round Pond where another eagle landed and stood on a nearby sandbar while we were fishing not fifty yards away!
The fishing was amazing even for someone who does these perch extravaganzas all of the time. The three boys landed twenty nine perch in about an hour. Needless to say I was busy!
We then paddled to the big rock where we got out to stretch, ate a snack and dipped a few pond critters (always more difficult late in the summer and on hot days) with good results.
On our return to Seven Tree Pond it was clear that the boys had all mastered paddling canoes if not steering perfectly. An excellent afternoon outing but a little sad because after Labor Day kids return to school and I won't see many families between now and the end of my season in November.
Fall is coming meaning perfect weather willing fish and spectacular scenery. Make your reservation today to spend some time in the Maine Outdoors!
Leaves are already falling!

A few leaves have changed on the trees that are under stress, like those growing in wet areas. Goldenrod is in full bloom and the sumac is magnificent...... Read the article
Pickerel!
Last fall I enjoyed a day that I labeled a pickerel panic. Today was not an equal to that day but we are well on the way to some exciting fall fishing. This morning's clients met me at the appointed time in a light rain. They decided that since they had multiple trips booked in the next week that they would pass on fishing this morning. Since I was ready to go and now had a few free hours. I decided to do a little fishing on my own.
You guessed it I hooked and released maybe two dozen pickerel in a couple of hours along with eight or ten perch and oh by the way three largemouth bass. Quite a morning! I used both a spinning and a fly rod and had the best luck with the fly rod using a fly I have developed over the years. I also saw an adult eagle and two young eagles.... Read the article
