Rain and wind this morning; chilly enough that I started a fire in the woodstove to remove the chill from the house. A good day to be at my desk and not on the water for sure.
Yesterday I had the opportunity to take a couple of researchers from the University of Maine out to catch a few stripers that they would extract stomach samples from. Read more about the project here. No luck getting any fish into the boat for the sampling though.
To me the real news is that someone is finally doing a study of a saltwater species of significant economic value to our coastal economies. I have thought for some time that the basic research in fisheries in both fresh and saltwater is at best lacking for good species management decisions. The fact that we do not know what stripers are eating while here on the coast of Maine sort of proves that. Of course I have opinions like every other guide but fact would be better.
Hopefully this project is a start on that sort of basic research that will improve management decisions. Recognizing of course that the political will to implement those decisions seems to all to scarce at this point.
The weather is predicted to clear tomorrow and I am looking forward to getting back out on the water.
Although I do have next winters firewood to stack.
