This morning we woke up to a coating of ice and frost. Not really a surprise, it rained yesterday and well into the evening changed to wet snow. Temperature in the upper 20’s. Not unusual for Maine in late April. The morning was bright and clear if a little chilly with almost no wind. I decided to take advantage of my semi-retired status and go fish on Megunticook Lake for a few hours. I like to get a handle on water temperatures and still like to catch a few fish.
When I arrived at the boat launch the temperature had risen enough that all of the ice was gone from surfaces in the boat but not enough that several layers of jackets were not required to ride down the lake. I enjoyed a pleasant morning and yes, I caught more than a few fish. Missed a bunch too; clearly the water temperature of just under 50 degrees has slowed reaction times a little.
After a couple of pleasant hours, I could see a squall building off to the west. Expecting a rain shower I headed to the boat launch and loaded the Lund. All loaded and pulling onto the road as the first drops fell, something I consider a mark of having learned something about the weather in 40 plus years. Except, I could not believe my eyes, those were not raindrops but snowflakes! As I made my way back to Union it snowed quite hard in fact on the Hope end the road had a light coating of snow!
No worries I have driven in the snow before (and even towed a boat trailer in the snow many times) so making it home was easy. Good story but there is a kicker; after lunch I was filling the wood boxes in the house amongst gently falling flakes. April 20 and snow showers, this winter does not want to give up.
No worries, it gets warmer most every day. The grass is green and the daffodils are in bloom. Warm sunny days are just over the horizon although in a different direction than todays snow squall I am sure.
