Spring (well sort of) is very slowly coming to mid coast Maine. Snow is mostly gone except where the plows piled it near the driveway. Frost is working its way out of the ground which means frost heaves and soft lawns! We have had a few warmish days and firewood consumption has dropped off significantly. The solar panels generate about three times the power we use on a nice day, I still find that amazing.
For many years April 1 was the opening day for open water fishing here in Maine. Not the case any longer but those sorts of traditions are very hard to break. The ice is mostly gone from the local lakes, and I am itching to get back on the water. It feels to me like spring has been slow to come this year. It is a little late compared to recent years but since I have been reviewing and sorting blog posts from the last 20 years, I can say with certainty that this is about normal. The one thing to note is that spring has been dry and after last summer’s drought I am guessing that we will be dealing with low water levels again this coming summer. Not a huge deal but it does restrict me from some of the places I would normally fish.
I have finished getting the boat ready to go for the coming season with the list of little aggravations all fixed. I won’t bore you with the details but needless to say the next warm afternoon should have me on the water once again and not long after that back into the guiding routine which will mark the start of Maine Outdoors 40th year in business. I am certainly looking forward to those days!
You missed a good chance to hear a few guide stories, try out a Thomas and Thomas fly rod and eat a little barbeque at Selene’s Fly Shop. Good attendance lots of great stories and food from Bucks across the street in Gardiner. Thanks to all who came out and made it a fun afternoon.
Selene developed a fly to commemorate my guiding anniversary (picture at the top of this column). A nice take on the fly I have called for years my half a chicken on a hook. She even had one swimming in the test tank and for the record I know it will be a great fly for pike, freshwater bass and stripers. You can guess the first fly I will be casting on that big day out.
As always come write or call if I can help you create your outdoor memories. Or make your reservation online at this link.
Looking forward to sharing some of the summer weather with you!
Best regards,
