Wondering on a snowy morning

It is fascinating how the universe presents related topics. I started my day discussing a difficult situation involving a now unlicensed and unethical guide. It was a stark reminder of how important professional integrity is to our profession and its public perception.

Almost immediately after, I was asked to support testing for aspiring guides who are under the current legal age. I was impressed by some of these students' knowledge when I worked with them last spring. However, knowledge and the maturity required to run a business are two very different things.

In Maine, we don't have the 'outfitter system' to shield new guides; they must handle their own insurance, taxes, and liability immediately. Looking back on my 40-year career, I realize how much I had to learn about handling different personalities and high-pressure scenarios. Not to mention simply showing up every day for it. I want these young guides to succeed, but I wonder if the current testing ensures they are ready for the complexities of running a business keeping clients safe and happy.

A while back I ran small business seminars for other guides, but interest dwindled and I stopped. Recently I have been participating in the Maine Tourism Association workforce training internships and understand completely that not everyone who is interested has the skills, work ethic or interest to succeed. I guess the real question is how do we figure out who they are and then support them?
