September is here, and it feels like the season is gently tapering down. Just last week, I took a family with kids out for what I expect will be the last family fishing trip of the season, and now the kids life vests are stowed away until next summer. My schedule, which has been jam-packed for months, is finally starting to show some openings. Don't worry, I'll still be guiding well into November, but the frenetic pace of summer is definitely slowing down.
This time of year is a favorite of mine. The days are still warm, often reaching 70 degrees, with crisp, clear skies and very little wind. My only complaint is the way the September light changes. It becomes so flat and washed out that it's nearly impossible to spot fish on a shallow flat or a big boulder hiding just below the surface—seriously, I couldn't see a car-sized rock if it were right in front of me!
Over the next month, the landscape will transform as the leaves change into their brilliant autumn colors. What a show it will be! As the days get shorter, that little flashlight on my keychain, now with a new battery, is getting more and more use. Soon, it will be indispensable as the sun rises later and sets earlier.
Despite the fading light, this is truly the best time of year. I'm so glad to be able to share it with you all.
