Are you working or is this a day off?

As you might imagine it is hard to tell in my world at times. In order to make you successful I need to spend more than a little time on the water just looking around and trying things that I guess might work. Doing that is quite different than just fishing for fun. First off I move a lot trying different spots in fact catching one fish usually means off to the next place. After all I now know it works here where else should I try?

This morning was a near perfect late spring morning cool but with little wind and scattered showers in the forecast. I decided that I would just go fishing. A nearby lake was fishing pretty well before the latest batch of cold and rain, but I had not been there for a week or so. Nice short drive and no one at the boat launch or on the water.

This lake has crystal clear water that allows me to see the fish take the fly or refuse it. I decided that I would simply fish and not keep track of anything. I started with a big streamer for my fly and it worked very well. The bass in this lake are still on the beds  but not really defending the beds aggressively. Although at one point I had three smallmouth bass of about 2 pounds taking turns striking mt fly. I did manage to hook one of them.  After an hour and a half I switched from a big streamer to a surface popper. The surface fly was a lot more fun to fish and brought aggressive takes that were a load of fun.

No idea how many I hooked and released, a bunch, a great morning out. Loaded up the boat and was home by noon. You should have been there!
